Osteopathy at Melbourne Holistic Physiotherapy
Osteopathy treatments available
Vanessa uses mainly osteopathic techniques in her practice combined with her deep knowledge of diagnosis and pathology from her physiotherapy background. She successfully combines osteopathy and physiotherapy to provide a powerful and holistic system for most conditions. The osteopathic techniques she uses are generally not practiced by regular osteopaths and require extra study in addition to an osteopathic training. These methods are outlined below.
The treatment methods I use:
Barral Visceral Manipulation
Upledger cranio sacral therapy
Strain counterstrain
Muscle energy technique
Trigger point therapy
Barral Visceral Manipulation
Visceral manipulation was founded by the French physiotherapist and osteopath, Jean Paul Barral. It can help with disorders such as urogenital disorders, injuries from a car accident such as whiplash, back pain, headaches and many more. It is a gentle form of therapy using gentle manual manipulation to mobilise the organs so that they move and glide in their healthy range. “It evaluates and treats the dynamics of motion and suspension in relation to organs, membranes, fascia and ligaments. VM increases proprioceptive communication within the body, thereby revitalising a person and relieving symptoms of pain, dysfunction, and poor posture”.
Upledger cranio sacral therapy
Cranio sacral therapy was founded by John Upledger, and osteopath and physician. It is a light touch approach calibrating the cranio sacral membranes and fluid in the spinal cord and around the brain. It enhances the function of the nervous system, and is effective for a range of problems such as back and neck pain, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, headaches and migraines. To learn more go to
Strain counterstrain
Every nerve muscle, tendon and other structures in the body can contract and produce pain in response to stress and trauma. This technique gently positions the body so that the structures release. Treatments are painless and can help to alleviate musculoskeletal conditions, headaches, migraines and weakness. For more information go to
Muscle energy technique
This is a gentle manual therapy that uses the body’s own muscle contraction to gently reposition joints such as those of the spine. It avoids crunching joints which weakens the ligmaments over time. It is an effective technique to repostion painful and stiff joints in for neck, back, pelvis and sacrum
Trigger point therapy
A trigger point is a tight and tender area in the muscle which refers pain into another part of the body. The therapist will find the tender point and massage it to relieve musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction.
Osteopathy and combinations of treatment techniques
Vanessa will use a combination of physio and osteopathy techniques to treat your condition. Because these treatments work deeply with the whole body there is no need to attend appointments several times a week making this therapy economical as well as effective.
